Foundation Awards Ten Academic Scholarships for 2007-2008 School Year

The Foundation Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that ten awards will be dispersed to deserving area youth from three distinct funds: The Alice Meyer-Brown Scholarship, The Motorola – Terry Jaron Junior Golf Scholarship and Illinois PGA Foundation Scholarship.

Alice Meyer Brown Scholarship

Alice Meyer Brown ScholarshipAwarded to graduating Illinois high school women who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in the classroom, in the community and on the golf course, the Alice Meyer-Brown Scholarship is a $2,000 award that can be renewed at $1,000 annually for three years.

Our 2007 recipient is Erica Woodall from Normal, Ill. She graduated from University High School number 1 in her class and will be attending Illinois Wesleyan University this fall studying Chemistry and competing on the women’s golf team.

Illinois PGA Foundation Scholarship

The Illinois PGA Foundation Scholarship Award encourages and promotes the attainment of higher education goals for the children, grandchildren, child-in-laws, nieces or nephews of Illinois PGA members who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement.

FoundationAdditionally, any individual who resides within the geographic boundaries of the Illinois PGA Section and is currently enrolled in a Professional Golf Management Program (PGM) at one of the PGA accredited colleges or universities offering such a program, shall be eligible for a Foundation Scholarship Award.

The Illinois PGA Foundation provided six $1,000 scholarships to the following recipients for the 2007-2008 academic year:

Sean Aldrich, Buffalo Grove, will begin his pursuit of a degree in Professional Golf Management & Business at Coastal Carolina University this fall. His golf coach, PGA Professional Dan Kochever, says of him “Sean is passionate about golf and aspires to be an instructor in the future. He will be an asset to Coastal Carolina University’s PGM program."

Jaclyn Campoli, Naperville, will be attending the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities to study Psychology and Spanish. While at Waubonsie Valley High School Jaclyn was an Illinois State Scholar, member of Spanish Honor Society, High Honor Roll member for all eight semesters and was the Business Law Student of the Month in Sept. 2006.

Katey Kohler, Canton, will be a freshman student this fall at the University of Illinois. While at Canton High School she was a member of National Honors Society, Illinois State Scholar, IHSA Scholastic Achievement Award and President’s Education Award winner.

Lauren Moody, Lake Bluff, is beginning her third year at Knox College. A Creative Writing major, Lauren is a co-founder and editor of three Knox College magazines.

Kelsey O’Neal, Glenview, now in her junior year at the University of Illinois is pursuing a degree in Accounting. She has earned academic distinctions as a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, member of Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman honors society and as a recipient of the University of Illinois Women’s Golf Team Academic award.

Kristina Sakas, Northbrook, attends Indiana University and is a sophomore majoring in Biology. She has spent her summer volunteering at Lutheran General Hospital to gain valuable experience and knowledge that will help prepare her for continuing on with medical school.

The Illinois PGA Foundation Scholarship Fund is made possible through a contribution from the Don Pieper Endowment Fund.

 
The Motorola - Terry Jaron Junior Golf Scholarship

MotorolaTerry Jaron was a longtime Motorola leader. His legacy to Motorola customers, dealers and as a mentor to Motorola employees throughout North America is unmatched. Terry absolutely enjoyed the game of golf, and this love for the game extended to his support of junior golf. From the countless individuals who were touched by Terry’s spirit, leadership and positive approach to life, Motorola is proud to honor Terry by supporting some of the best talent in junior golf, who are also some of the brightest high school scholars in the state.

Recipients are members of the Illinois Junior Golf Association that were selected based upon their high school grade point average, ACT scores, math and science background and responses to three essay questions. In 2007, a $2,000 scholarship was awarded to:

The Motorola ScholarshipKyle Weigand, Franklin Park, graduated 5th in his class from Leyden High School. He scored a 34 on his ACT and was captain of the Math Team, co-captain of the Junior Engineering Technical Society, starter on the Academic Team, member of the Science Olympiad, Italian Honor Society and National Honor Society. Starting in the fall, he will attend Augustana College where he will study physics and pre-engineering.

Kathleen Pettinato, Chicago, graduated from Northside College Prep High School. She scored a 33 on her ACT and had a 4.73 GPA. In addition to participating on the golf, water polo and swimming teams, Kathleen was a participant in the ACE Mentor Program, an Old St. Patrick’s Youth Group Leader, 20th Annual Chicago Young Playwright’s Festival participant and Will Power Senior Member of Theater Ensemble. In the fall, Kathleen will become part of the first women’s varsity golf team at Washington University in St. Louis where she will major in biology.

Ryan Patton, Orland Park, graduated 6th in his class from Brother Rice High School. In addition to his academic distinctions and achievements, which include a score of 32 on the ACT, APEX Honors Diploma, the John Hosty Crusader of the Year Award and being recognized as an Illinois State Scholar, Ryan was very active both in and out of school organizations. He was captain of the golf team, Student Council treasurer, secretary and vice president of the Key Club, member of the Math Team, tutor at St. Martin de Porres Women’s Shelter, an Edmund Rice Camp Volunteer and a caddy at Midlothian Country Club. In the fall, Ryan will major in business with a study in finance at the University of Notre Dame.
