Troy Wins 2020 Illinois PGA Senior Match Play Championship

2020 ILLINOIS PGA SENIOR MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

North Barrington, Ill. – September 23, 2020 – Michael Troy (Zigfield Troy Golf Club) defeated David Paeglow (Kishwaukee Country Club) in the Championship Match, 5 and 4, to win the Illinois PGA Senior Match Play Championship at Biltmore Country Club on Wednesday, September 23. This marks Troy’s first Senior Match Play victory in just two career appearances.   

Troy and Paeglow, who’s sons are roommates and teammates on the Illinois State University Men’s Golf team, faced off in the in the final. Paeglow made birdie on the first hole to take an early 1-up lead over Troy, but Troy wouldn’t lose another hole the remainder of the match. He made back-to-back birdies on holes three and four to take a 1-up lead, and expanded his lead with wins on seven, eight and nine to take a 4-up lead at the turn. The pairing tied the first three holes on the back nine before Troy made birdie on the par-5 13th hole to take a 5-up lead. He closed out the match with a par on the par-4 14th hole to win 5 and 4.

“It was just fun to play this week,” said Troy. “It’s been a busy year for everyone so it’s nice to be able to get out here and compete. I had some tough matches against some great competitors. It was a fight all day today. I didn’t play too well in the morning, but I was able to pull it out. Then I started making some putts against David (Paeglow) in the final match, and that was really the deciding factor.”  

Troy earned the 13 seed following his finish at the Illinois Senior PGA Professional Championship. The top-16 seeds received byes into the Round of 32. His first match was against the 20th seeded Margie Muzik-Curtis (Oak Park Country Club) in the Round of 32. Troy defeated her 5 and 4 in a match that he never trailed in.  

The Round of 16 featured Troy facing off against Roy Biancalana (Black Berry Oaks GC). Troy defeated the fourth seeded Biancalana 2 and 1 in a back and forth match.

Troy then took on fifth seeded Kevin Rafferty (Golf Galaxy) in the Quarter Finals. Despite being up for most of the match, Troy needed an eagle on the par-5 18th hole to defeat Rafferty 2-up and advance to the Semi-Finals.
 
The Semi-Final matches were played in the morning before the Championship Match. Troy faced John Cleary (Exmoor Country Club) in his Final Four match. Once again, Troy never trailed in this match, and he made the turn leading the match by one. Back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 gave Troy a 3-up lead with three holes to play. He and Cleary both made par on the par-3 16th hole and Troy clinched the match 3 and 2 to advance to the Championship Match, which he would go onto to win.    

The Illinois PGA Senior Match Play Championship marked the last regular season Senior Illinois PGA event of the season. The Illinois Senior Open marks the final Errie Ball Senior Player of the Year points event before the Illinois PGA Senior Players Championship. The Senior Players Championship is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday October 12-13 at Twin Orchard Country Club and features the top 32 players on the Errie Ball Senior Player of the Year points list.
